A home that doesn’t have enough drainage will show itself when a big rain storm hits. Since water will not be able to drain, a home is expected to have puddles of water and a wet basement around its foundation. However, there are steps you can take to improve your home’s drainage.
1. Make a proper check
You should check the downspouts and gutters to make sure they will work properly and that they are clean. When a house doesn’t drain, it could cause gutters to get clogged with dirt or leaves. When this happens, the water that falls into your home will not be removed.
2. make sure gutters are free of debris
You should clean up any debris that may be in your gutters. You can do this using a small trowel. Make sure all gutters are checked because blockages in the drain system are likely to cause improper drainage.
3. Change the slope of the land surrounding the house
It will do this when you continue to see poor drainage in your home while downspouts and gutters are running. The surrounding area must be added with fill soil to ensure that the rain flows downhill away from your home. This will prevent dirt from building up around the foundation of the house. In fact, dirt won’t seep into your basement either when you do this procedure.
To improve the drainage of the house, you can also use an exterior drainage system. However, this option may be more expensive and labor intensive than simply changing the slope of the land with additional soil.
4. Build a swamp, water garden, or pond
You can do this construction in the humid area of your house. With this, you may need the help of a professional as you need to carefully sculpt the soil to ensure that the water supply continues. Having a small pond in place will allow wildlife to naturally gravitate to the humid areas of your home as places to drink.
Birds such as mockingbirds, tendrils, cardinals, and cat birds will search for a moist garden. In addition, you can place a collection container that you should hide behind the bushes so that the runoff water is stored. Lastly, your home may have some areas that are often damp. You just have to put in a lot of moisture-loving plants and turn the area into a boggy garden.
