Erythritol and maltitol have emerged as a great relief for those who want to enjoy chocolates without challenging their calorie chart. Erythritol and maltitol are natural sugar alcohols that taste sweet without adding calories to your diet. They do not affect blood sugar or cause cavities, making them a popular ingredient for the sugar-free dessert industry. Erythritol is 60-70% sweeter than table sugar, while the latter is about 75-90% sweet. However, despite the high sweetening index of maltitol, its use is not recommended by health experts, dietitians and doctors. Why is this then? Let us discuss.
There are several reasons why erythritol should be preferred and maltitol discontinued. Here are the four most important reasons:
Calories
Erythritol has a very small caloric content. It is only 0.2 cal / g, as certified by the US FDA This value is 95% lower than that of table sugar. On the other hand, the calorific value of maltitol is 2-3 cal / g, which is only 25-50% less than table sugar (4 cal / g). Therefore, although maltitol can claim to reduce calorie intake, it still adds a lot of calories to your diet. This gives erythritol a huge advantage over maltitol for calorie-conscious people.
Glycemic index
The glycemic index is a measure of the effect that a substance has on the level of glucose in the blood. Maltitol has a glycemic index of around 50, close to that of sugar (GI = 60). Therefore, say NO to maltitol if you are diabetic. Erythritol, on the other hand, has a glycemic index of zero, which means that it has no effect on blood glucose level and is therefore completely safe for diabetics.
Sweetening index and glycemic index
Maltitol is 75-90% as sweet as sugar. But 90 is what people in the low carb industry say. The real figure is around 75%, that is, 3/4. Now the GI of maltitol is more than three-quarters of table sugar and even the caloric value is around three-quarters. So by replacing sugar with maltitol as a sweetener for a sugar-free dessert, you’re not doing your body any good in terms of glycemic index or calories. The case is different in the case of Erythritol, a sweetener with a calorific value of only 0.2 cal / g (5% sugar) and a zero glycemic index. It is, therefore, the best option.
Intestinal discomfort
Maltitol has been found to cause intestinal upset in people, with symptoms beginning with intestinal cramps, intestinal gas, and sometimes even diarrhea. Erythritol is better even in this case. It does not cause any disorders related to viral gastroenteritis.
One of the renowned manufacturers of sugar-free desserts and sugar-free solid dark chocolate cups is Chocolate Dreams and Wishes, a company that produces numerous delicious chocolates that use erythritol as a sweetener.
