Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by variable and recurrent symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm. Common symptoms include coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and wheezing.
It is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Its diagnosis is usually based on the pattern of symptoms, response to therapy over time, and spirometry. Medical treatment is required for this condition and is often used with an inhaled short-acting beta-2 agonist (such as salbutamol) and oral corticosteroids. Symptoms can be prevented by avoiding triggers, such as allergens and irritants. Essential oils can also be used, along with medical treatment, to combat the systems associated with this disease. The use of essential oils as detailed below should always be used to aid conventional medical treatment.
Eucalyptus essential oil
The strong aroma of eucalyptus opens the congested airways of the lung. Eucalyptol, a chemical that breaks down mucosa and phlegm, is the active ingredient in this oil that allows asthmatics to breathe easily. It is great to inhale this oil through steam. Add a few drops of oil to warm water, either in a pot or steam inhaler. Bend over gently and breathe in (you may even want to place a towel over your head for the full effect). This will expand the constricted airways.
It’s also great to use if you have a cold or the flu!
Frankincense essential oil
Frankincense oil is an expectorant with anti-inflammatory properties. Eliminate congestion in the nasal passages and lungs.
An added bonus is that this oil fights nervousness, anxiety, and stress. If you’re feeling stressed too, this may be the one you want to use.
It’s great as a chest massage – add a few drops of the oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil and apply. Or add a few drops to a diffuser and breathe in the scent.
Oregano essential oil
Oil of oregano has antifungal and antibacterial properties. This oil is also used to keep colds and flu at bay. A good use for this oil is to create a mist spray. Add 25 drops of oregano oil to 5 ounces of water and use as needed to relieve symptoms.
Thyme essential oil
Thyme oil is an expectorant, with antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It is believed to increase immunity and strengthen the respiratory system. Fight colds, coughs and all symptoms associated with asthma. It is used very well in steam or steam therapy to facilitate breathing and reduce wheezing.
Clove essential oil
This oil has effective analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties that allow it to fight asthma. Do not apply clove oil directly to the skin. If you want to use it as a chest massage, make sure it is diluted with a carrier oil first.
