Tennis can be a tricky sport when you’re just starting out. The following 7 beginner mistakes are what I think are the biggest challenges for the newbie. He addresses these issues and he’ll be on the mend in no time.
1. Not judging the ball
It is very common for a beginner to not judge where the ball will go and how fast it will get there and play properly. A beginner often thinks that the ball is going to be shorter than it really is. They run towards the ball and consequently hit it too hard and lose their balance when they get there. They don’t realize that the ball will actually fly deeper.
2. Hitting the ball too hard
Another big challenge for a beginner is how not to hit the ball too hard. They see a ball and hit it. A beginner is just thinking about connecting with the oncoming ball and may panic a bit. One of the main reasons for hitting too hard is that they don’t have a target. His arm doesn’t know how much to swing, if he knows the distance, then he can get an idea of what force is required.
3. Being too tight
Being too tight is another challenge. When you start playing tennis you contract too many muscles and you lose that all important feeling and you can hit the ball too hard and generally do everything wrong. So how can you become a little more relaxed? A good tip is to rate your tightness from 1 to 5, with 5 being very tight and 1 being relaxed and going with the flow.
4. Stop the racket at the point of contact
You must try and learn to complete the tracking of your shots. When you realize you’re hitting the ball too hard, one consequence is stopping the racket at the point of contact and not completing the follow-up, leading to an ineffective hit. By doing this, you actually contract a lot of muscles in your arm as you stop the flowing forward motion and lose control of the ball.
5. How to play with a bow
Another big challenge is hitting the ball in an arc instead of in a straight line. The easiest way to hit the ball is to play in a straight line from the ball to the target on the other side, however we want to get into the habit of playing with a bow. The straight line approach can often result in the ball ending up in the net. Then, to avoid going into the net, he may overcompensate and hit too far, causing the ball to go over the opponent’s baseline. Of course, you can get lucky from time to time and the ball can fly over the net and land on the court, but it will not always bring results.
6. How to reach the ball in time
Learning to get to the ball on time is another big challenge. If you’re late to the ball, you’re still moving and off balance, which will obviously affect your shot. We tend to naturally move towards the ball with the minimum speed necessary and arrive just in time for the shot, but we want to arrive faster to be ready and prepared.
7. Throw the ball consistently in the same place
Throwing the ball in the right place every time can be very challenging when serving. Sometimes it can go behind, sometimes ahead, often too far ahead or too high, too low, etc. This throws you off balance along with correct technique.
There we have it, the 7 biggest challenges beginners face. In order to become a more competent tennis player, we must learn to overcome them and work on each aspect to strengthen our game.
