Every year, usually in early summer, or around New Year’s resolution time, we see a huge increase in advertising for fast weight loss diets. I mean I like going to the beach as much as anyone else, wouldn’t it be great if when it came time to put on my bathing suit, I could start a quick weight loss diet and achieve my goal in no time? That would be fantastic. But that’s not how weight loss works. Unfortunately, weight loss takes time and some work to be effective.
Another downside of fast weight loss diets is that if you can actually find one that works to take the weight off you, it’s terribly unhealthy for you. Weight loss is something that has to be achieved over time.
So you want to lose a few pounds to get ready for swimwear season, you made it your New Year’s resolution, or you just want to get healthy. What you need is a plan of attack that will get you to your weight loss goal. The best way I have found is to use a diet called calorie shifting.
Now everyone has seen diets that require you to count your calories and stick to a highly regimented diet to reach your weight loss goal. These diets are difficult to follow because they allow for a very small margin of error. Also, if you can stick to these types of diets, you’ll find that usually before you reach your goal, your progress may have plateaued. That can be very frustrating.
Calorie shifting follows the same premise as counting calories, but makes it more effective and easier to follow. Essentially, instead of eating the same amount of calories each day, you alternate the days of caloric intake. For example, if you have determined that you need 1,600 calories per day, you should consume 1,200 one day and 1,900 the next. You want to make sure you alternate high and low days so they are different all the time. These changes in intake trick your metabolism into thinking you won’t get the same amount of food every day. When your body gets used to a certain amount of calorie intake, your metabolism stalls and makes it more difficult to lose weight. With a calorie shifting diet, you are also encouraged to have a couple of cheat days a week. On these days, you are encouraged to eat whatever type of food you want. The only rule for cheat days is that you shouldn’t overeat. If you finish eating feeling too full, you’ve done it wrong.
I have been guilty of searching for the perfect diets to lose weight fast. I’ve tried some really crazy ones too. But the calorie shifting diet has been the find of a lifetime. It has been very easy for me to follow and I am seeing wonderful results. Just remember, it took time to be overweight and it will take time to lose it.
