After endless weekends of hitting the bars and clubs of Los Angeles, he finally came up with the idea: “I want to be a bartender!” It is obvious that there is a lot of money to be made, but how does one start? And is it even possible to get in without experience?
The first thing to remember is that bartending is about more than just memorizing drink recipes. This is a sales job, which means you have to be good with people and think on your feet. Now mix this with some basic bartending knowledge and you’ll have a better idea of what it takes to be a bartender.
People tend to fall into two categories in Los Angeles, either they are inexperienced and want to get in, or they have moved to Los Angeles with experience as a waiter, but can’t find a job.
For those of you who have little to no experience, let me give you two pieces of advice. First, don’t go to bartending school! Save your money and time. Most bars, clubs and restaurants in Los Angeles don’t view bartending school with much respect. It’s not that you haven’t learned anything there, but it’s not a real experience. Ask any bartender who works at a Los Angeles hot spot and the last thing you’ll hear is that they got there because of bartender school. Your goal should be to gain experience in any way you can, whether it’s through a caterer or as a mixologist for family and friends. You need to get some experience on your resume and learn the basics.
Second, don’t lose hope. You can enter the Los Angeles bar scene with little to no experience. As mentioned before, this is sales work, not a contest to see who can memorize the most drinks. This means that you need to start by learning the basics first, and then put yourself out there and start interviewing. Just remember, every bartender working today was once an inexperienced beginner, but unless you take responsibility for finding an opportunity, it probably won’t ever happen to you. (This is all described in detail in the Behind The Bar training course)
#1 Get a plan
Now, for those of you who have experience as a mixologist, the first thing you need to do is get a plan and stick to it. Los Angeles is one of the most competitive places to get a job as a waiter, but it can be done.
One of the best pieces of advice I ever heard from a bartender was “you have to treat your job search like a job.” One way you can do this is to set a goal of how many bars you will get closer to each week and stick to it. Keep track of bar managers’ names and contact numbers so you can re-register. Finding a great bartending job is all about timing and things change quickly in this industry, meaning a place that’s fully staffed one week might need someone the next.
#2 Scout Locations
Now that you’ve set a goal of how many places you plan to go to each week, it’s time to find these places. First, make your dream list of places you’d like to work as a bartender and apply first. As mentioned above, there is a lot of turnover in this industry, so it doesn’t hurt to keep in touch.
Second, decide how far you’re willing to travel, and then start driving around these areas to see what you find. New bars and restaurants are always opening in Los Angeles, so you’ll probably find some places you’ve never seen before. Also keep in mind that most restaurants/nightclubs have certain days/times that they interview people, so it’s important to ask when those times are so you can come back.
#3 Spread the word
One of the best things you can do is start telling all your friends and family that you are looking for a bartending job and to keep their eyes open. I would recommend going a step further and making a list of friends and family. Call each of them and ask if they can remember you when you go to a bar or restaurant to ask if they are hiring. You’d be surprised how productive this can be.
#4 Presentation! Presentation!
Remember that a bar is hiring you because they think you can make money, represent the vibe of their place, and can be trusted to handle money. With that in mind, always remember to look your best and act professional! Your style should match the place you are trying to work for and always carry yourself as someone who is confident, outgoing and trustworthy. You’ll also be surprised how far a good smile and handshake goes when you meet the bar manager.
#5 Follow up
This is the most important point to remember. Let’s say you decide to apply to 5 bars a week. The first thing to do is tell the bar manager that you’re eager to get in and will check in from time to time to see if anything is available.
I would then recommend following up 2 weeks later in person to see if anything has changed. If not, thank them for their time and remind them to keep that in mind, then 3 weeks after that, follow up with a phone call (ie if you haven’t found a job yet).
This type of follow up will show your persistence and reliability. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for the job every time you sign up. If they are overstaffed, you can propose that they hire you for one day a week or as a backup bartender. Showing that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get in goes a long way in this industry.
Now go start!
