The Rhone River runs through a Garden of Eden. Along its banks, the orchards burst with ripe fruit. Cattle graze on open pastures. The forests are full of game. And the vineyards from Lyon to Avignon produce incredibly diverse wines. These resources and pre-Greek history make the Rhone Valley a food lover’s paradise.
THE CULINARY CAPITAL OF FRANCE
The Rhone River rushes toward Lyon from 8,000 feet high in the Swiss Alps. It meets the river Saone from the north and cuts sharply, to the south, towards the Mediterranean Sea. Lyon’s rich history of home cooking and celebrity chefs makes it the culinary capital of France. Masters like Paul Bocuse nurture the city’s 16 Michelin-starred restaurants and Lyonnais cork stoppers serve the best down-to-earth and traditional cuisine in town.
Bouchons are cozy little restaurants that specialize in Lyon’s hearty artisan cuisine. This is not a tall dinner; It is typical, homemade, family-style food that sticks to the ribs. Approximately 20 bouchons obtain annual ‘authentic’ certification from the Lyon Cork Defense Association, but many restaurants use the term. Regulars return for rustic, robust, and absolutely delicious meals from little dirty (ham and lentils), dumplings (fish meatballs), or more daring dishes like andouillette (offal sausage).
Exquisite cheeses also come from the pastures south of Lyon. St. Felicien and St. Marcellin are delicious creamy cow’s milk treats that ooze when cut. Serve tapas Brain canuts: chives, shallots and spices mixed with cream cheese, similar to yogurt.
RHONE WINES
French journalist Leon Daudet said: “There are three rivers in Lyon: the Rhone, the Saone and the Beaujolais.” But many choose to accompany this meal with Cotes du Rhone fruits.
The broad Cotes du Rhone appellation covers the entire Rhone Valley. These wines are simple, fruity and offer excellent value for money. A step up in quality, the strictest quality controls at the Cotes du Rhone-Villages produce more concentrated and elegant wines. But look for smaller denominations, usually named after a city, for the best quality.
RHONE NORTH (North Rhone)
These smaller appellations begin about 20 miles south of Lyon, near the ancient Roman city of Vienne. The most famous are Cote Rotie and Hermitage; fine wines that compete with Burgundy and Bordeaux for prestige. They come mainly from Syrah (Cote Rotie and some Viognier), reach incredible length and delicacy, with floral aromas and blooming black fruits. St-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage are Syrah at better prices, but they rarely reach the same heights.
These areas also produce some white, but the star appellations, only white, are Condrieu and Chateau Grillet. Made 100% from Viognier, these rare wines are among the best whites in France. The north may be more famous, but about 95% of the Rhône wine comes from the south.
SOUTHERN RHONE (South Rhone)
The vineyards hug the Rhone closely to Valence, where they almost disappear. When they return to the south of Montelimar, they move further away from the river and take on a more Provencal flair. Grape varieties are also expanding: Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the main appellation in the south, allows up to 13 red grapes in the blend.
Chateauneuf-du-Pape, (New Castle of the Pope) received its name from the Popes of Avignon. In 1309, the French Pope Clement V transferred his court to Avignon. Seven Popes reigned from here until 1377, when Gregory XI transferred his entourage to Rome. The French popes encouraged the vineyards and built a summer palace northeast of Avignon, in the town of Chateauneuf-Calcernier. Renamed Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the 19th century, the city is surrounded by rocky vineyards that produce rich, spicy and deep red wines. Of the 13 red grapes allowed, most growers use four: Garnacha, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault.
Gigondas and Vacqueyras are neighboring wines that use similar blends. Gigondas is often more rustic than Chateauneuf-du-Pape, but the best producers make excellent wines. Vacqueyras looks like the best Cotes du Rhone-Villages.
Although 95% of the Rhône wines are red, the most precious roses in France come from the south. Just north of Avignon, across the Rhone to the west, Tavel and Lirac produce fresh and dried Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre roses.
SOUTHERN COOKING
Provencal and southern Rhône cuisine reflects the Mediterranean sun. Vegetables, olives, herbs and garlic are the basis of many delicious dishes in the south of France. Provencal stew It is a hearty stew, often with veal from the free-range black bulls of the Camargue; the marshy plain south of Arles. While Marseille is famous for Bouillabaisse, all over the south you find Fish soup, a velvety fish soup served with garlic croutons and spicy mayo oxide.
Exploring the expanse of the Rhône, experience 3000 years of history and a wide range of culinary delights.
